problems with watching movie

I have this excellent of a copy of a movie and I successfully made a copy of it but it won't play in my philips dvd player. so I put the original in first then replace it with the copy and then the movie works. at first it just loads and then nothing. what would cause this. I am totally confused. please help me thanks

Guessing that when you stop or eject that it notes the position the laser was in.
When you insert the copy, it can read enough information to know it's the "same" disk.
I wonder if it would remember if the machine was powered down after ejecting.
You probably have a disk that while burned OK, is marginal as far as the player is concerned - that would be a media quality issue.

the disc I using is a Sony +r and the player is philips 3000 series dvd player and it is new. any other suggestions. thanks

Depending on who made the disks (Sony uses different ID codes - codes which indicate the true manufacturer).
If the ID code is MCC (which is Verbatim) then you may have just got unlucky - but if they are Ritek, I would consider changing.
You can read the code with ImgBurn and I think Nero has a utility to show the ID.
If you have a log of a recent burn it would probably list it.

I went with a verbatim +r disc . now I have a problem where the disc plays into the menu click for chapters or play, click one of them and the movie starts then stops. like the dvd is just spinning the disc. any ideas will help. thanks

Are you compressing at around 3,300MB if you using a DVD-5 SL ?

yes I am. is this a problem. still the movie is Avatar is still not in sync with the video and audio. when burning it to a verbatim disc using dvd shrink the message is no video or audio selected. This has stymied to the end. but once I did a get a burn using avs video converter the problem exists as above. I am in no mans land here.

Are you making backup of a DVD, or converting from an AVI/mp4... to DVD?
I am asking because you mentioned Avatar and avs video converter...

no I have an excellent dvd copy of avatar and since i was having problems with shrink and dvdfab i used avs dvd copy which copy the movie but still had problems with getting the movie to play and having the play and chapters click but not going forward. I have using a verbatim +r at 4300mb burn at 8x speed on my burner. thanks
