Since the common factor is Nero, can you try a 'Test mode' burn using ImgBurn for comparison.
Run ImgBurn and select 'Write files/folders to disk'.
Insert a blank CD and click the 'Device' tab.
If it recognizes the disk it should list the supportes speeds that the selected burner can use for that particular media.
Drag a file onto the window and check the box for test mode.

you have to create a cue file to make an audio cd. i have done it ages ago but cant remember exactly how ( i know 1 of the members here told me how to do it in a forum post about a year ago) but afterdawn may have a guide or imgburn forums have a guide.

The error log popup has 'File' > 'Save' at top of the popup screen, but you can still get it back by clicking 'Help' > 'ImgBurn logs'on the main window, top menu.

That only shows that you started and exited the program twice (I highlighted the times) without any other activity.
Delete those logs and try another test;post that log.

I would check the IDE ATA/ATAPI CONTROLLERS and make sure that they are set to PIO instead of DMA.( CONTROL PANEL > SYSTEM > HARDWARE > click DEVICE MANAGER, now you should see a section called "IDE ATA/ATAPI CONTROLLERS". expand that list, and there should be 3 items. dbl click wherever the IDE channels (primary master/slave or secondary master/slave).

Have you tried uninstalling Nero and then using the Nero General CleanTool? This will remove all Nero entries on your pc. Reboot and then reinstall Nero and see if it works. This might correct your issues. sounds like the settings might have been corrupted. I use to have issues with it not wanting to burn at all and tried what Nero tech said to do, and was back up and running with in a hour.

dvds burn fine with nero, convertx, only problem with anything is cds, i really dont want to format as we all know its a pain, As i say i could burn CDs in minutes now they either fail or take 5 hours, I dont think nero or conflicts is the problem, obviousy not burners as DVDs burn
