Windows XP Pro SP3
Exact Audio Copy v0.99 prebeta 5
Lame 3.98.2

I just installed EAC and tried to rip an MP3 file from a track on a CD. Lame did't run after the .WAV file was produced, but I got no error message from EAC. Then I checked the box labeled "Check for external programs return code" in the Compression options under the External compression tab and tried again.

Here's what I got:

The external compressor returned an error!

Options : -p -h -b 256 -V 0 %s %d "0tmp)58-!.wav" "0tmp)58-!.mp3"

File : C:\path-name-blahblahblah.wav

and the WAV file was NOT deleted as the checkbox said it should have been.

I wanted something like the old alt preset extreme vbr 256kbps, so I used

-V 0 %s %d

in the Additional command lines options box.

I eliminated the error by using

-V 0

in the Additional command lines options box instead. I got an MP3 file with the properties I wanted and the WAV file was deleted after the Lame compressor finished.

I don't know whether it's the new EAC or the new Lame that makes things go right without specifying %s %d, but I think the AfterDawn guide titled Exact Audio Copy Installation and Configuration should be updated.

I don't think it matters, but I installed Adaptec's ASPI for Windows XP.

Well it's a bit of a DUH .. the error informs me that you don't have the lame libs installed properly.. either that or their path and full name isn't specified properly from EAC

Don't think aspi drivers will make any difference.. but other drm's will...

another DUH!! .. of course the .wav file wasn't deleted.. it will only be trashed if the conversion completes properly.

lots to think about there.. and as for the guide.. who needs them anyway? These programs are so close to 100% brainless one click that it's incredible that people even seem to fail with them at all.. .. Demanding an update to something because YOU can't make it work isn't really the way to go about things. The program interface and functions hasn't changed. Investigate (google) your precise error and see how many other people are having the same problems.

you know its funny. i was just thinking the other day that i bet someone soon is going to question that guide since it is seven years old.

here's the basics: although the guide is seven years old, all of the steps to install and configure EAC and LAME are the same. So just download the latest versions of each and go from there. The only thing thats different is that the command line for the newer versions of LAME is different. go here for details for LAME:
http://lame.sourceforge.net/index.php

and there is an option in EAC to not delete the original wave file after the track is converted to mp3

but as my buddy varnull stated, the programs themselves are fairly easy to install and configure. just use the guide as a reference to the different options there are in EAC and LAME.

For the best quality mp3s use EAC (exact audio copy) to rip your audio CDs and LAME to encode them. Follow this guide:
