I need to be able to record either a headphone level audio signal or a line level signal from another system using my laptop, which only has a mic input. I'm looking at this device on Newegg, a USB external sound adapter. The description says it supports both headphone in and line in using the same jack. Can I be confident this is true? How is this possible using only one jack?

I guess the software asks you to identify what you are plugging in. I have seen software like that but I can't be sure you will be using that software. Newegg would not sell something that can't work.
