I currently have Monster Turbine Ear Buds and looking to get something better. I was looking at the Shure 440 model headband. Would these be better than what I have now? I am looking to spend under $130CAD on some good headphones with good bass. Any suggestions?

Phones or buds. In the ear buds have the best base. Next would be in the ear phones. The reason is sub-sonic waves (below 20 Hz) require massive power to generate over the air. If the device is in contact with your ear canal the vibrations can move through solids requiring far less power to generate. Because the they are tiny, both in the ears devices are cheap to produce. The phones being more expensive. All are small enough to use ultra expensive rare earth magnets. The magnets are so efficient they are louder and produce a more brilliant sound than devices with regular magnets. You need to take care you do not damage your ears with any in the ear device. All produce more than 120 dbs. Even short periods of sounds at 120 dbs can damage your ears

I have not used these in-the-ear phones but I have heard great things about them.
In the ear phones

I use one of the older Phillips in the ear buds. They run as low as 7USDs and are true in the ear buds. They produce very low sub sonics 8 Hz. Very few devices other than other BOSE in the ear knock-offs can produce tones that low including HiFi speakers.

So are Shure 440's worth buying? I like in ear buds but it would nice to have something I don't have jam into my ear. Are the 440's better than what I currently have, Monster Turbines?

Okay. I have seen awesome reviews on the 440's and can get them from Futureshop for $120CAD.

On the web I have seen plenty of them for 99 USDs so I would shop a bit more for a better buy.

Sorry for butting in but most persons think what they have is great; music is ultra subjective. Check out the top sticky and go to audio myths. Hearing is the most subjective of our senses. We can't process all of a complex music piece so our brain will focus on what we what to hear. That ought to open your eye wide! User reviews are just about worthless because a person hears exactly what they want to here. You need to rely on the specs. 10 Hz is very low, the lowest I have seen on over the ear phones for even twice that price.

Plus, this forum is not heavily trafficked. You may not find one person that have used your phones before you want to buy.

Yeah like I have been reading reviews and for the most part the 440's are getting great reviews. But some people find there isn't enough bass and others say they are incredible headphones for the price. I am pretty set on getting these.

10 Hz is a lot of base. If you want to be impressed look how much you would need to pay for speakers. Check the range of sub woofers going for more than 1000 CAD each. Normally, you only use one anyway. I bet half will not produce that amount of base.

Humans start losing the ability to hear the high end from a teenager till you die. The hearing range of a baby is 20 Hz to around 20-21 kHz. By the time you hit 20 you will be down to 18 kHz or lower. The practical high end range for a 30 yr old is even less than that. Probably closer to 15 KHz. It is relatively easy to produce high pitched tones but the tones get increasingly harder to produce as you go down in pitch. If you can hit 20 to 20 Khz you are HiFi. The difference between treble and base is, people can feel sub sonic tones but there is no solid evidence to support that you can sense ultrasonics. ipod mug me white ear buds have a range of 40 Hz - 15 kHz. There are very LoFi. You can't even hear a soft base drum beat with them so you don't hear the music correctly. Most good ear phones have a range of 20-20kHz. To go down to 10 Hz is serious base. My in-the-ears goes down to 8 Hz but I really doubt anyone could feel the difference. With the tiny devices using tiny amounts of power you can't expect the same performance of monster speakers sucking down close to a kWatt per speaker that can smack you and tremble masonry walls. All you get is a little tickle. My mind has been able to translate that tickle to what it might feel like with monster speakers. That is the difference between mili watts and K-watts. I rather doubt if you have heard any consumer device with that much base. They are crazy expensive and require a very expensive power source.
