i have downloaded a movie for myself, it says its a dvdrip/avi ive tried to play it on windows media player 10 but a notice keeps coming up saying windows media player has encountered a problem and has to close, i put it on my wifes pc which has windows 7 and it plays fine,ive downloaded all sorts of codecs but nothing is doing it please can you help thankyou so much

If the movie plays on another PC then it's not corrupted... but you might want to check its codec... avi is only a container. You can try GSpot http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ or Mediainfo http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en Check the CCC codes... the file might be fine but the headers are telling WMP it has an unknown codec. There are utilities that can change the FourCC code.

For alterntive playback try the VLC media player: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

On a privacy note... I can't remember, does WMP phone home about what people watch/listen to?
