DVD-RW problem

Hi.
I noticed that my laptop's dvd-rw drive can't read cds/dvds anymore, but after a couple of tests, only the original ubuntu 9.10 disk and the asus drivers disk work.
I can't update the firmware as the drive is protected, blocked on some asus firmware.

model: TSSTCorp CDDVDW TS-L633A

The laptop was bought 8 months ago and it's still in warranty, but sending it to service would be the last alternative.

What solutions do i have to solve this problem?
