HI,

my son bought some DVD-R disks.
Sony 1x-16x compatible & although it says is "wide compatble", he did not notice the ultra small caution:-
".....new standard-high speed media, 2.1/16x-high speed dvd-r revision 6....."
When he could not record on his HP laptop he thought the drive was brocken.
He asked me to record for him on my PC & brought those DVDs.
I did not read the caution either & my DVD did not work.
So we busted both our drives from carelessness & ignorance.
Anything we can do to correct the drives or are they permanently lost?
Thanx .......nick

discs don't come into physical contact with the drive so you can rule out discs breaking the drive theory, laptops aren't the best to use when burning so no suprises there as for the pc can't say why it didn't work

Thanx all,

I do not doupt your advise but so far both DVD-RW drives will:

a. read DVDs will not write to new empty DVDs but,

b. will read & write to CDs.

I do not know how to put attachments here to show that the Caution says:-

".....using this disc on some drives might damage the disc or the device......"

We are out of business now & have to buy another drive.

The reason why your drive might not write on the "new" discs, is because it doesn't support them
What is the brand/model of your burner(s)? What firmware are they running?
All that information can be obtained by running ImgBurn (one of the best free burning applications).
A firmware update for your burners might cure the problem, or buy some 8x discs and try before tossing the drives in the junk pile.

Piss me off, and I Will ignore You!

If you have never recorded to DVDs before on these drives, there is a possibility that they are "DVD-ROM" drives that can play and record CD-Rs but only read DVD discs. If you post the model number of the drives, many people here can tell you whether or not the drives can record DVD discs and what the most recent firmware is for them.

joe, dvd rom drives only read/play cd/dvd disks but cannot burn to either. a combo drive plays/reads cd/dvd disks but only burns cd disk.

You're right. I couldn't remember the consumer term. All of the drives we were testing could write to CD-Rs; so when versions showed up that could also read DVD discs, we called them "DVD-ROMs," which was technically the wrong term. Thanks for the correction.

not roxio, only Nero, but even that does not help.

Tell me, if you put a dvd rw in your drive & ritght click on the drive do you get "Erase" & "Format"?, we only get these with a CD disk in the drive, & unfortunately I do not remember if we got it with dvd discs before the problem.

We used to be able to copy/paste in dozens of DVD-rw before.
