Okay so I have a US ps2 slim (SCPH77001) and I recently brought final fantasy X internation (NTSC-J) because it was a game from a different region I heard that you have to buy a swap magic for it to play. So I brought the 3.8 coder version, and I don't understand how to make the game work.. I followed all the steps, but I just end up with a black screen. So I'm trying to figure out, what I'm doing wrong. Do I need to buy magic keps or a flip-top? Or can I just make it work with buying extra materials?

since your using a slim ps2 you just need to block all the sensors that tell the ps2 that your opening the lid. heres a video tutorial on how to do that.
