MiniDVD issues. Repair VOB?

I have a Sony miniDVD that was recorded with a camcorder. The miniDVD plays fine in a standalone DVD player, but I have problems with the 1st vob (vts_01_1.vob).

I have tried different methods of getting the dvd onto the computer... copying the files from the disc to the computer, using rip software like dvd:rip and SmartRipper, even using a recovery software, dvdistaster... any method I use, the 1st vob is screwed, but the 2nd one is fine (there are only 2 vobs on the disc).

I have tried opening in VLC, nothing...
I have tried opening in GOPchop, nothing...
I have tried opening in Media Player, nothing...
I have tried using Avidemux, and it throws an error, "Could not open the file".

I have run vst_01_1.vob through VOBEdit and the first 400 or so lines are empty... is there anyway to edit the vob to make it work?

I am puzzled by the disc playing fine in a standalone player, but not in a computer!?!
