At first I thought it was my drive, so I bought a new drive. I brought it home and no dice. Still burning at 4x. Then I tried a reformat. Again, nothing. Eventually I just tried a different program. As you could probably assume by now, nothing :P

I'm starting to think it's my motherboard, but hopefully just some driver issues or something. My specs are:
XFX nForce 750a mobo
AMD Phenom 9500 (overclocked if that helps)
OCZ RAM, idk the model no.
XFX 9600 GSO

Programs:
CloneCD
ImgBurn

Media:
Verbatim DVD+R DL

Any ideas? :D

What drives are you using?

Some drives cannot support less than 4x.

The minimum drive speed isn't a problem on either of the drives. My old drive used to burn at the speed I wanted and my friend has the same one I just bought and his works fine. Like I said, I'm very sure it's not a problem with the burner.

Well, I've been using these discs for a while and have had no problem going at 2.4 until recently.
I'm not so concerned right now. At 4x all of my burns are coming out fine. I just want to solve the problem early in case it eventually escalates and I start burning coasters.

What program are you using to burn your discs? Some programs, several versions of Nero comes to mind, default to MAX speed on DLs.

And what discs are you using? I noticed you didn't mention that upon rereading the above.

Ah, sorry. I'll go update my first post.

I tried two programs (neither of which gave me problems until recently).
CloneCD and ImgBurn.

I am using Verbatim DVD+R DL discs. By the way, the package says 8x, up to 10x. Again, I haven't had problems with my setup until very recently.

I think you just supplied the answer.

There are 2 versions of the Verbatim DLs, the MKM 001s which are rated for 2.4x to 6x burning and the MKM 004s (or 003s, I'm working from memory here) which are rated for 4x to 8x or 10x burning(depending on your drive/burner).

The discs you have now are not rated for burning slower than 4x, and the rated speeds are incorporated within the MID (the MKM 001, etc.)and are in the firmware of your drive/burner.

Ah I see :P
That does sound very reasonable, and come to think of it, I found one of my older unused discs lying around and decided to try it out. That one burned beautifully at 2.4x. There is still one problem however. My friend is having no problem burning at 2.4x with his new pack of discs. I asked him to borrow a few about a week ago and he gave me 5 discs from his pack. I only ended up burning 3, but from the pack that he gets 2.4x on, I still got 4x. Weird.

Do you know of anything that could explain that? It seems like we are getting closer to the answer. Everything is starting to make a little bit more sense.

I just burned another disk and checked the log on ImgBurn. It came up with this:
Destination Media Type: DVD+R DL (Disc ID: MKM-003-00) (Speeds: 4x, 6x, 8x, 10x)
You were very right. Doesn't explain how my friend manages 2.4x though. Oh well. I can now rest knowing that there's nothing wrong with my computer, thanks Hobbit :)
