OK, here's the story, I'm at my whits end on this one. I have begun the tedious process of ripping all my CD's and converting them into MP3 format for a media server project. The first 40 or so disks were ripped and converted with NO PROBLEMS. Then suddenly, my drive (Pioneer DVR111D) will read that there is an audio disk, but not allow any program to play it. Then a few tries later, it won't even register an audio CD has been inserted. Here are my indications:
Factory DVD: Play no problem
Game DVD: Plays no problem
Recorded DVD: Plays no problem
Data and Video DVD: Records no problem
Data CD: Plays/Records no problem
Audio CD: Nothin', haven't tried recording one yet.
Here is what I have tried so far:
Reboot
Reload Drivers (for both DVD and ATA)
Uninstall/Reinstall Drive
Reg Edit to remove upper and lower whatever.
Uninstalled all media programs (repeat all above steps)
Swapped to brand new Pioneer DVR112: Same Problem
I thought it might be a DRM issue so I also tried inserting several of the CD's I have already ripped, and they aren't recognized.
- Ran full virus scan: nothin
- checked for Sony's little bootloader: nothin
Researched online for hours and couldn't find anything that matched my symtoms, drive works reading CDA disks, then stops completely. New drive does same exact thing.
I'm officially out of options. I know that someone on this board will have the answer, you always do! Any suggestions are appreciated!
**Update: I attempted to burn an Audio CD. It burned about 3% of the project and gave a laser power calibration error. This kinda points to the drive failing, but why would 2 drives do the same thing?**

coincidence?? .. how about a bad ide cable or controller??
Thanks for the response. I haven't installed any new programs or even updates for that matter. The CDA's played and then on the next disk I tried it just didn't, and hasn't since.
The link you posted, while similar isn't really what I am experiencing. One drive connected at any given time, both exhibit the same symptoms. I would think if it were a media player (of any type) issue, it wouldn't start "suddenly", but would have been ongoing from the installation point. I have been able to rip CDA's in the past with no problems using the same software.
I thought about the IDE cable too, but untouched cabling doesn't just go bad (well at least 99.9% of the time). I hope it isn't the controller, cause that would essentially mean a new system build. Not against it, but finaces need to be present! Although, it could be a Mobo issue, I lost literally HALF of all my USB ports about 8 months ago. Gave up on trying to figure that out...
Have you tried the little audio cable? .. I see a few systems where that little mofo is playing up.. The pins on the mobo seem to slowly oxidise on some boards.. Loss of the usb's does suggest the mobo is playing about.
What about trying installing windoze on a surplus hdd (anything over 4 gigs will hold xp) and testing if it's still the same problem. That would suggest a hardware issue.
I'm not entirely sure but I don't think the audio cable would stop a drive from recognizing a CDA. Stranger things have caused less I suppose. I'm pretty sure the MOBO is on its way out, but I am hoping it lasts until tax season! Time for an upgrade anyway.
I solved MY problem, but not THE problem. I said "F" all that IDE crap and bought an SATADVD-R. Works perfectly. Now if only there were an quick, inexpensive way to rip 500+ CD's, this one at a time crap is for the birds!
Did something turn off the "enable digital audio" tag in the drive properties by any chance? .. what does seem to have happened is a hardware failure.. possibly the cd laser is playing up on just pressed cd's.. weird things happen sometimes.
