Okay, for 10 days I am struggling with this. It's a sony vaio vgn-fw230j laptop. When I try to open it from my computer it ejects the tray and i get this error "please insert a disk into drive"..I am able to eject it from my computer.

What I did is, i performed a factory settings recovery: no luck..

I deleted lower filters from the registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} (and there is no upper filter even after factory settings restore): no luck...

i tried a diagnostic start up to avoid a software confliction: no luck..

I have updated my vista 64 bit no luck..

I treid to update firmware and registry from sony website in safe mode and I get this "no competible drive"

I disabled cd/dvd and restart the laptop it detected and installed the device by itself but it still gives the same error "please insert a disk into drive"..

After all these steps I am able to use cd/dvd only when I reboot or put it sleep mode and open it back..in each restart cd/works fine just once..if i eject and put the cd back it doesnt work until i restart the laptop again.sony says it's a defective hardware however it seems ok in devmgmt.msc and msinfo32..i even tried to update bios and no luck..sony support talks about laser and physical errors, if so how come I am able to open any cd/dvd when reboot it?? below are the info:

name: matshida ram.cfm" class="forum_link" target="_blank">dvd-ram UJ870BJ ver (1.01)

user noted that after he born images to a cd it never worked again..

my guess is registry is corrupted and factory setting restore doesn't reload all the registry. Consequently I dont know how to fix this but what I know is, it's definitely not a hardware issue...

Thanks in advance for any suggestions...
