i have a gateway 507GR desktop i want to replace the cd/dvd burner.on the web the burners say SATA, i opend my desktop it has a ribbin typ conn. is that what SATA stands for ? i dont want to order the unit with the wrong conn.

PS the desktop is about 5 years old

since you where very helpfull. should i stay with a IDE conn. or go to a SATA conn. with an adop. is one better then the other ?

being it is an optical drive, leave it as an ide as won't see any speed increase with sata. also will leave your 2nd sata port free for another hd if you need another.

just one more time, i read that the newer cd/dvd burners need a 80 wire IDE cable how do i find out if the GATEWAY 507GR has that wire ? i tried looking at the wire in the comp. and the gateway site but could not get that info.

they will still run on the old 40 wire cable. look at your ide cable to your cd burner & count how many strands are there, 40 or 80.

hi thank you again. they are 40 i will try it whit that one first and see how it works. i am replacing it with a lite-on 22x dvd rw only because the old one is a lite-on
