Hey everyone I'm attempting to burn wii games and i know how to do them and Ive successfully done them in the past with this same burner. Now I know when burning a DVD it must be done at slow speeds. I use to do this with my SONY DW-Q120A at 1x but for some reason now it burns the disks at 6x. I guess the firmware i use now doesn't support 1x and was wondering if there is any way to get my Sony drive back to 1x burning. I don't even know why it even changed maybe i updated it myself. Well if you want to know im using the program Imgburn and like i said i use to burn them in the past at 1x with the same drive so i know its possible to get it going at that speed. THANKS AGAIN AND PLEASE HELP ME!

Presumably you've had no success burning your Wii games at 6x?

Download and run this please:
http://discinfo.rpc1.org/

And let me know what firmware version you are in-fact using.

Have you changed the type of DVD you are using in between noticing this change in available burn speed?

basically with my current firmware which is PYC5 i am burning at 4x and its still not that good i get system errors on my wii during random playtimes. Ive also tired majority of newer firmwares out there but they all burn at even higher speeds... Im looking for the slowest. In image burn it says available write speeds are 4x, 8x, etc but nothing lower...is there any old old firmwares that let me go 1x like in the past... It use to work i dont know why not now... Im also using memorex 16x dvd-r's and they worked in the past as well...NEED ANY HELP AND IDEAS!!!

As far as I can tell, that is the oldest firmware available for that drive. Have you updated the IMGBurn software between being able to burn at 1x and not? If so, I would suggest installing the old version again and seeing if it supports 1x writing. This may fix your issue if IMGBurn (newer versions) stopped supporting 1x writing. I think this is probably the cause.

The next part of the post is not advice, as such, because it wouldn't fix your 1x burning issues. However, it would provide your burner with a much needed update, and you may experience better results burning at higher speeds.

The latest official firmware for your drive can be downloaded here.

There is no reason why an updated official firmware should remove 1x writing strategy from your drive's capabilities, but it probably will as that speed is increasingly redundant in general use now. Edit: I have actually checked and I'm reasonably sure it will.

Furthermore, apparently your drive it what is known as an OEM (made by someone else and re-branded as another) - in this case your Sony is a re-branded LiteOn 160P6S. This drive apparently supports cross-flashing to LiteOn firmware, which essentially means your PC will recognise the drive as a LiteOn and burn as such. The advantages of this, in your case, would be an improved firmware in general (but again, I'm not sure if cross flashing to a LiteOn would solve your 1x burning issue). The required firmware for this procedure can be found here. You should be able to flash back to a Sony firmware if you run in to complications.

NB: There are always risks when flashing firmware to drives. Do not run any other programs, have a disc in the drive or otherwise interrupt the process or you may run into complications. You would use the .exe file found within the extracted.rar archive you've downloaded.

Let me know how you get on, or if you want anything explaining.
