Digital8 Video Capturing Trouble

My MacBook will not recognize my Sony HandyCam when I attempt to capture footage. I am using FinalCut Pro and have tried following multiple instructions I found online and have had no results. I think it may be the video deck in the camera itself but am not entirely sure seeing as I am a relative novice to using digital8 video.
