Transfer AAC file to iPhone

Hi, I would like to transfer an AAC music file from my PC to my iPhone via iTunes. However, iTunes tells me that the file cannot be added to the iPhone because the phone is not designed to play it.

The AAC file is a regular music track (non DRM-protected), iPhone 5s and latest version of iTunes.

I thought AAC files were developed by Apple and that the iPhone supports playback of such files?!
