how do i decompress an mp3 audio file so i can pick out which songs i want and leave the rest? any ideas please?

i want to be able to extract individual tracks from an album and burn them to a disc. if i burn mp3 to disc my cd player only recognises the album as a whole so i cant lets say play track one then skip to track 9 directly. instead i have to fastforward till i think i am near to the track i want. thankyou.
