SpaceX has completed the acquisition of AI coding startup Cursor, one of the largest technology deals in recent months. The deal is valued at $60 billion and will be paid in new SpaceX shares. Honestly did not expect this pairing at all. Cursor tying its future to SpaceX's compute instead of staying dependent on OpenAI or Anthropic makes sense strategically though, especially once you consider both of those companies are building their own coding tools now. Makes total sense they'd want to own more of the stack instead of building on a competitor's foundation.
The data center access angle is the real story here I think, more than the valuation number. Access to that kind of infrastructure could actually let them iterate faster than smaller AI coding startups that don't have a hardware giant backing them.
