X Copy Gold crashing machine!

Hi! I'm new to this whole DVD burning lark and things are not going well. I have a copy of DVD X Copy Gold and Xpress. Both read from the DVD with no problems, but it all goes to hell when I insert the blank disc. With Gold, my machine spontaneously restarts. I've tried several times, same problem each time. I tried to use Xpress instead, and although it gets a few minutes into writing the disc, it then freezes my machine completely. I'm running Windows XP home edition on a lappy.

I've tried searching but haven't found anything on this particular foul-up. Does anyone know what the problem might be? I have used DVD Clone with no problems, so it seems to be a problem with the software rather than the hardware.
