i just spent most of today modding a PS2... (it's my first mod) i modded a v7 with a magic v. i got it all done and tested it a few times and it seemed to work fine (exept for the fan which i broke trying to remove it... any workarounds for a broken fan?). suddenly it wont boot any games at all... it just kicks me back t the browser menu sometimes even after displaying the playstation logo... i checked and cleaned the laser with q-tip and alchohol also scraped and cleaned the connections ont the ribbon also tried ajusting the cog-wheel to fine tune the laser... nothing seems to make any difference... is there anything else i could try? i'm pretty new so be gentle...

Im 99% sure the problem is the fan. Without a working fan, your PS2 will overheat and you will not be able to play games for very long. So you will probably have to get a new fan unless you can fix the one you broke!

i'm not so sure... although i realize the fan is a serious problem that needs fixing before it's fuctional i've been running it with the cover off and a fan running directly onto it mnitoring the heat and turning it off when it starts to get warmish... this problem occurs before it even starts to get warm... could it have overheated and fried something important already?

okay, so i turned it on this morning and it booted normaly... so maybey it was too hot? i'll try to fix the fan but it wont be easy... the plug for the fan has snapped off at the board... i tried glueing it back on with super glue and re-soldering the wires that connected it... it still wouldn't send power to the fan... is there somewhere else i could power it? could i solder the fan wires onto the board somewhere?

your fan sounds like its totally wasted, I wouldn't risk soldering the fan to the board, as your PS2 may end up completly KaPuT.
I found this, you might wanna check it out if your still having fan problems. -

so i received the usb fan and tested it out... the fan is very small... i don't think it's intended to replace the main fan... it's some sort of supplemental fan... very weak and from the front so it doesn't cool the right areas... i tested it out and sure enough it overheated... just so others don't make the mistake... a large fan is blowing on it and it seems to be o.k. it hasn't overheated... but now theres a new problem... when it turns on it just gives me a blank screen... no start-up no nothing... the power comes on and the disk engages but it doesn't seem to send any video or audio...

confusing? squim, you say the fan doesnt work, then say it does works?!? but now theres no audio/video? Is that with or without the fan in the usb?

sorry, i'll try to be more clear. the fan, that is the main PS2 fan, is dead. All my attempts to fix it have failed. I ordered a fan that someone posted a link for here but its a fan that plugs into the usb port on the front of the playstation and it doesn't cool it sufficiently. meanwhile i have been cooling it with a large fan throught the gap where the fan was this seemed to keep it plenty cool and it didn't overheat. It worked perfectly for a few days then one day it wouldn't turn on... it powers up and the disk spins all the lights come on but theres no sound and no video being sent... subsequent attempts to turn it on would sometimes go the startup screen but it would go blank again shortly after or when it was trying to load a disk.

i'd hate to give up on it but it's probably dead.

The usb fan should cool the system even though its at the front of the PS2. Does it send air in or out of the front? As for the AV problem Im 99% sure its your scart lead, the wires inside it are probably damaged. you could try bending the scart about and see if you get a picture or audio signal, if that doesnt work then you will have to get another scart lead.

the fan blows in through the front. i did a test with the USB fan and left it running without any other cooling. I came back an hour or two later and it had over heated. i don't think it can be trusted to keep it cool.

i tried the scart cable on another playstation and it worked fine but it could indicate a problem between the board and the plug. maybe a loose connection in there... i'll see what i can find when i can get my tools.
