Hi everyone, kinda new at this so please bear with me.

I've tried burning a few .avi's i've downloaded off the internet and had mixed results. Let me start off with the original problems and see if anyone can help.

I started by converting the .avi to mpeg-2 using a few different programs (tmpge, mgi videowave, sonic mydvd) and then attempting to burn them onto dvd. Using Sony DRU-500A if that helps. Anyway, I'd convert the file and it would always come out too big. It would only take up say 2G on my hard drive but when I would get ready to burn it would always exceed the 4.7G on the DVD. What am I doing wrong?

If I was able to convert the file into a size small enough to fit onto a DVD I would ALWAYS get an error. No matter what program I used to burn.

Finally I was able to figure a sort of work around but it's very time consuming and it's not very customizable. I've been combining the .avi's with VirtuaDub and burning them with ArcSoft Showbiz. The only problem is I can't create menu's, can't do much of anything except burn the file as is onto the dvd. At least it works.

Anyway, if anyone can help it'd be much appreciated. If more info is needed, just let me know and hopefully I can give it to you. Thanks

Chris

what audio type are the authoring programs using? Selecting PCM for an mpeg stream encoded with ac3 or mpeg audio will usually end up with files that are too big for DVD-R.

I know that you can't have a file of more than 4.36 GB to play a movie on a DVD disc. Is your file too big to start burning to a DVD?
