I have just installed a nec 2500a OEM drive. It works fine with CDR's but when I insert a blank DVD -R
it show no empty space on the disk. I am using nero 6 and I have tried updating the firmware. thank you in advance for any help

That sounds like the situation you get when you put in a blank RW disc that hasn't been formatted. Do you have a different brand of media you can try. Maybe you have a defective blank.

Remove the drive in device manager and re-boot so Windows reinstalls it again. That will straighten out any possible problem with the system driver for the Nec.

I tried removing it and reboot.. still no luck any other ideas?

Are you using an OEM version of Nero?? Some OEM versions do not have the DVD burner software avaialable/enabled.
