Hi,

What brand/type media are you using?

Your log shows your burner being out of DMA which is often caused by too many errors during the burn process. Try enabling DMA and se if that helps things along.

http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/storage/IDE-DMA.mspx

If that doesn't work then try this:

Go to Device Manager >

Expand the tree for DVD/CD ROM Drives >

Find the drive in question, right click it and go to Properties >

Under the Driver tab, select Uninstall then OK.

Now reboot and Windows should detect and reinstall the drive.

To enable DMA mode using the Device Manager

1.
Open Device Manager.

2.
Double-click IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers to display the list of controllers and channels.

3.
Right-click the icon for the channel to which the device is connected, select Properties, and then click the Advanced Settings tab.

4.
In the Current Transfer Mode drop-down box, select DMA if Available if the current setting is "PIO Only."
If the drop-down box already shows "DMA if Available" but the current transfer mode is PIO, then the user must toggle the settings. That is:

? Change the selection from "DMA if available" to PIO only, and click OK.

? Then repeat the steps above to change the selection to DMA if Available.

im following those steps but i cant tell which on is the burner

i have
Primary IDe Channel
Secondary IDE Channel
SiS PCI IDE Controller

is there any way to tell?
or should i just uninstall the burner?

You can uninstall the IDE that your burner is attatched to, it won't hurt anything and sometimes works better than uninstalling just the burner.

Use Nero Info Tool, under the Configuration tab, to find out whether your burner is on the Primary or Secondary IDE and then uninstall it accordingly :)

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/cdr_software/cdr_tools/nero_info_tool.cfm

Would you be so kind as to run one of the Sony media through DVD Identifier and post the manufacturer ID?

- Secondary IDE Channel
-Master: PIONEER DVD-ROM DVD-117R
DMA on
Autorun on

- Slave: HP DVD Writer 400c
DMA off
Autorun on

Thats how the burner is listed
so just uninstall the Secondary IDe channel
and restart so tha the DVD-ROm and Hp DVD Writer will reinstall?

and turn on DMA once it reinstalls if it is off?

Alrighty then,

The ideal setup would be to have your burner set as Master on the IDE (since it's the data hog of the two) and the ROM as slave.

After you uninstall the IDE and reboot, Windows should automatically set both drives to DMA when it detects and installs them.

The media you're using is good stuff so you should be fine there.

Try switching the burners around, uninstall the IDE, reboot then check the DMA settings. If they're good try another burn with a rewritable if you have one (pick up a couple if you don't, saves coasters).

Hi viper8437

The problem cropped up after your reinstalled windows - was this a fresh install.

Have you updated the SIS chipset drivers. For the last week I have been fighting a similar problem on my P3 machine. Tonight after updating to SP2 and installing a older Via UMDA drivers it finally works as it should

I hope this helps

If at first you don't succeed ...........!

not really sure what urs talking about chthompson
maybe u could explain it a little better

so i switched the drives, unintsalled and re-installed the drivers, and turned on DMA and it was successful with the +RW
then i tried a +R thinking the problem was fixed but it wasnt

ive wasted about 8-10 dvd discs

thanks for your help
but any other ideas? thanks

Hi viper8437

For full details of my PIII DVD burner saga see my post at http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/102624

When I upgraded my PIII machine to SP2 it gave me an error on copying the atapi.sys file. (I now believe to be corrupt). My other XP machines that I updated to SP2 did not have that error show up.

If the IDE controller has a conflict then you cannot burn DVD's. It can burn cd and play both cd and DVD.

Most modern motherboards to support the larger hard drives have an enhanced UDMA controller to support those drives (bus mastering drivers) Maybe your SIS chipset needs those drivers

I hope this helps

If at first you don't succeed ...........!
