Hello all,
I am currently installing a magic V chip into my ps2 and have come across a small problem. I've noticed that on the diagrams that for points A and SCEX (http://www.javex.com/manuals/images/50001.gif) and noticed that the arrows point to specific sides of the, *insert name of component with random numbers on top*, and was wondering if I had to specifically attach the wire to the one side or would it matter if I attached the wire in the middle for easier soldering?
I know that isn't very clear but maybe someone can pick out my ramblings
thanks in advance

you have to attach it to the side the arrow tip is on, but for the SCEX the two components are connected via a circuitboard trace, so in theory it doesn't matter if you solder where the arrow is or just to the left on the right side of the tan component

actually it seems I can't get teh solder to hold on either of those contacts
any hints of help without the use of flux paste (yes it seems for the small area I live in no stores, such as radioshack, don't seem to carry the stuff)
Worst thing is they are about the only contacts I have left to solder on the board:(

wow, i actually can't believe you got this far without flux....i'd say the only thing to be careful about is the heat of the iron, these little guys can get burned pretty easy - try to get a little blob of solder to stick to the board first, then heat that and stick the wire in.

haha I dunno what to say, i've been taking my time at it I guess...a lot of time, which is beginning to drive me insane:p
thanks for the thought tho I shall give it a try, probably wouldn't be such a problem but the scex connection is surrounded by so many other components

hey me again, sorry to keep bugging you about all of this, but I was over to my parents place today and my dad said he had some soldering paste.
I was just wondering, since I havent really used stuff like this before (flux i mean) but I was wondering does flux kinda look like a jell? Or have I stumbeled across some freak soldering tool of the past (the can looks very old haha)

yea its either jelly or a paste, just dip the end of the wire in it a bit to cover it, but you dont want a huge glob on there. the flux will literally melt and evaporate as soon as heat touches it, but you'll notice that the solder flows incredibly well wherever flux was touching

man I wish I would have had some soldering paste to use earlier it made it so simple but I as hoping someone can give me help on what it probably a very simple question (I'm a bit slow when it comes to the laws of electricity and all) but on the diagram for the Magiv V it says to solder gnd (the ground) directly to the board, does it mean to the green of the board or some bi of the copper that is showing?
thanks

here's how to boot different things:
PS2 originals and burns:
tap your ps2 on button like usual, as if it wasn't modded
PS1 originals, PS1 burns, and MOST dvd's:
hold down the on button (green) and let go as soon as the blue eject light comes on.
if for some reason you want to boot w/out the chip on, hold down the on button until the clouds come onto the screen.

hrmmm all I seem to be getting now is the red background screen saying please insert a legal disc (well basically it says that), I'm I holding the buttons too long/short? Or did my mod totally fuck up somehow?

try all of these discs (or at least the ones you have) and let me know if you get a red screen or not:
PS1 original
PS1 backup CD-R
PS2 original silver bottom
PS2 original purple bottom
PS2 backup DVD
PS2 backup CD-R

well it boots the ps2 silver backs (have no purple backs) and it boots psx originals but I can't get any go for the burns...the times it doesn't bring me to the "insert a legal disc" style screen if I click into the browser it says reading disc and then shows "no data"
I wonder is is possible for a solder joint to let go if it never fully soldered? (like the power connection to the chip)

well it is definitely possible that the chip is misinstalled...did you try a PS2 backup on CD-R? you'll have to use a small game obviously, but if you can boot that then your chip is fine - if not its either the chip or laser issues....

actaully man I must have you driven insane over all of this and I apologize for that but also thank you for actually helping me so many times
I opened back up a few minutes ago to realize tha i seems I had a VERY bad connection for the 3.3 volt lead it came loose from the board and with further inspection I've noticed that it hauled away the little copper bit with it...which sucks
but I do remember reading somewhere that you can find a ton of the 3.3v contacts on the board and by looking have ntoiced another hole directly to the left of the one shown in this diagram (http://www.china-magic.com/magic5/diagrams/MAGIC_V5000X.jpg) and was wondering if you knew if it carried the 3.3v capacity that i need?
again thank you for all your help it is greatly appreciated

umm what would it mean if it read a ps1 disc in the browser screen as a ps2 disc? (that there is an evil spirit who's really trying to get on my bad side?:p)

I thin kI have come to the conclusion (after a lot of research) that it may be a bad soldering of the scex connection (when soldering it I had a bit of trouble and with my luckit actually didn;t hold or something along those lines, guess I'll try that tomorrow
I don't have a ps2 backup of anykind right now but I did burn off a cd of snes-station and it failed to read that but plays all originals of course...:S
