Can't open avi file with virtualdub

Every time I try to open an avi file with virtualdub I get the following notification:

Couldn't locate decompressor for format DIVX.
Virtualdub requires a video for windows VFW compartible codec to compress video. DirectShow codecs, such s those by Windows Media Player, are not suitable.

What am missing? What kind of program do I need?

Get the DivX ;-) MPEG4 Codec release 3.11 alpha codec.
