Strange Hard Drive Problem

My father's computer at work has a strange thing happening. We were sitting in his office and he tried to open a program when the whole computer froze up. He rebooted the machine, but it never came up to windows.

We rebooted his machine and went into the BIOS and it didn't see either of his 2 hard drives. When we disconnect the master, the slave shows up in the BIOS. (We are currently installing Windows XP Pro on the slave to see if the machine is working okay.) We tried plugging the bad drive into another machine as the slave and it locked that computer up as well and caused the BIOS to not see the master anymore either.

We tried running the system recovery on the bad drive, but it doesn't see it. We also tried running chkdsk and we received a message saying the disk had something like "one or more unreccoverable errors".

I am assuming this hard drive is shot, but there are quite a few files my father would like to recover. Is there any other way we can get the files off of this drive. Ideally we would like to repair the drive (obiously), but if we have to buy a new one that is not a big deal, we would just like to salvage some of the data (of course this is the one drive that doesn't get backed-up by our servers every night...figures).
