Ello, newb here :). Was just curious about something. If i mod my PS2 with a mod chip, or flip top or something, can i still play online? I remember hearing if people played on Xbox Live with a modded xbox, they would be banned for life. I was wondering if there was a similar pentalty for PS2 online. I play online with PS2 a lot now (with unmodded PS2) and will also in the future. So i don't want to lose that option. Any helpful info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

if you use a flip top then you have no problems, if you use a mod chip then make sure it's in sleep mode and it should work fine

Thanks for the reply. So those flip tops work pretty well eh? I can't soldier worth a damn, at least i really doubt i could. Currently my PS2 scratches up all of my discs, i've sent it back for repair twice and it still does it. Can't have it messing up all of my new game CDS =/. So it can play backups/imports without any problems? Do i need a special CD to make it work? Thanks again.

Or maybe an HD would be better in my case eh? Can a HD play CD/DVD backups/imports?
Can the flip top play both CD and DVD backups and imports? Maybe someone could just point me in the direction of a big PS2 modding faq.

Heres the lowdown on DNA$ and $ony's online setup.
You can't just play backups online.. even with the fliptop, there is a tiny bit more to it then that.
If you dont run in sleep mode, you wont be able to load the game due to it failing SYSTEM auth. If you run in sleep mode, you wont be able to play due to failing DISC auth. Your DNA$ file on each online disc (and there can be more then one) needs to be patched, with the ID from YOUR original disc. Thats the only way you'll pass the disc auth.. if you want to play using the HDD, example FFXI, your going to need to run in sleep, because the game gets installed on the HDD, the HDD is a new area for me, so I have no idea on HDD, DNA$ work arounds. Sorry.
Best of Luck.

sleep mode is turning the chip on/off. you cannot play games with DNAS online (most games have it now) from your hard drive.

What kind of chip do you have? I have the DMS3, I hold in the eject button on the console.
Best of luck.

Well your chip might not support sleep mode, and it is different from chip to chip on how to put it in sleep mode.
Sorry.
Best of luck.

hey i'm new here, hope all is well.
I was curious i have a mod ps2, and recently purchased a network adaptor. I get a error code that reads (-881), and i am unable to connect. Is it cause of the mod?

Um it can be..
If your game is the original you might need to deactivate your chip.
I would really like to know if there is an error code listing posted somewhere.. but anyway, if its a backup your key might not be patched right.
Best of luck.

You need to patch the ID from the original disc.
