DVD+RW Drive and DVD-R disc problems...

I have a DVD+RW drive that can burn movies fine from shrink and the decrypter when using a DVD+RW disc. When I place a blank DVD-R disc in my laptop, the decrypter won't let me write on it because it "can't find the medium". Why is this? Can I only burn on DVD+RW dics? Should I be able to burn on DVD-R discs? How can I fix this?

What make/model drive is it? Nero Info Tool will tell you.
