Authoring with external Hard Drive

I want to buy an external hard drive as i donot have enough space on my laptop. I use DVD-lab for authoring movies. Did any one use external hard drive while authoring movies? Will there be any issue with speed of writing? I will be using a USB 2.0 interface.

Also my dvd writer is external. I never had any issue with writing from my hard drive. But when i use external hard drive for source of dvd, will there be any issue?

Please share your experiences about external devices.
