Lite-On LDW-411S will not read 8x DVD+Rs

Hi, I have tried for 2 days now to get my Lite-on to even acknowledge that there is a blank DVD+R in the drive. My burner is a 4x, but the only discs I can find (for a reasonable cost) are 8x. I have read about the firmware updates and have flashed my drive to the latest version, but the drive still just spins and spins until I remove the blank disc. It reads everything else, including 4x DVD+Rs, fine. Any ideas?
