Try doing a search for Audacity, which is a very comprehensive editor, or else the very under rated Kristal multitracker.

Just remember you will need a PreAmp to get the signal into your PC, and record at the highest resolution possible. Kristal will record in 32 bit floating point format, which can be done with a 16 bit soundcard too.
Dither down to 16 bit 44.1KHz when everything is done, and off you go.

Jet Audio 6.0.6 Basic would be great at the task of recording the sound through your sound card (via Line-In port).
