avi/divx converting runs waaaay past specified conversion time.

just recently i have d/loaded a couple of avi and divx files and started to convert them using Mainconcept MPEG encoder...in the usual manner.(which normally works fine)
what happened last night was that the conversion that would of normally have taken about an hour..never stopped! hte time remaining counter actually finished but the conversion process just kep on running for at least an extra 2hrs.
IT had to be stopped manually
has anybody had similar problems and can anyone explain why this happened.
