Hi,
First I going to start to build Monday. I have a K7SEM with a AMD Athlon 1800 now. I think the mobo is going up as I have already lost my floppy connector on it and now my AGP slot is gone. I can use the on-board video card but it is so slow I can't stand it. So I think it's time to move one.
This is what I have so far:
Mobo: ASUS "A7N8X-E Deluxe" nForce2 Ultra 400 Chipset Motherboard, Is this a good board? I always wanted an Ausu.
AMD Athlon XP Barton 3000+ Processor however I didn't get the OEM version and will need to put on a Heat Sink Fan. I have two news one (still in packages) that I have pick up. They are both Ultras for AMD CPUs however the packages actually say for use with AMD CPUs 3200+ and higher but the one I got is a 3000. Will this matter or should I just go ahead and get another one? I know I should have just gone ahead and bought a AMD 64 CPU however I bought a combo from Tiger Direct but change my mind about the mobo which was a Mach Speed V4MDMp VIa KM400. I decided to keep the mobo because with the rebate it was really inexpensive and since I try to put computers together for kids who can't afford them I know it will come in handy. A 3000 XP is a far cry from a 1800 Athlon I think???
By the way I will be using Windows XP Pro and was wondering about he service packs for it. I have both of them on disk and was wondering if I should put in SP1 reboot then SP2 before I put anything else on the HDD. I still don't have SP2 on either computers because something that Alcohol 120% or Damon left on my drive that I can't find.
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro AGP
I don't have any memory for it yet and would like to know what will work best in it. I would like the minimum of 1024 megs of hopefully the 3200 ones. I have heard that it really won't make a difference though. Should I get duel channel memory?
I have everything else to go with the computer. A 17' monitor, DVD-RW, CD-RW modem, printer, Scan maker 5900 scanner, surround sound speaker system. My case is a Steel Chieftec Dragon Server Case (Beige)and I have a new 500 watt power supply for it.
I was going to just reformat this HDD but I think I'll just get a new one since I have to start over anyway.
Okay now you have all the spec for what I'm building. Although I have put built a few computers in my time I always get nervous with the CPU and Heat Sink thing. And....................
I may have to send up a SOS! lol. I hope you guys will help na, let me change that to I know you guys will help if I need it, you always do! I'm so glad that I found this board in the forums. I look forward to hearing from you soon. I'm going to a computer show this weekend and will pick up the memory then. I've never had a problem with any memory that I've bought there unlike other things :(. Thankfully by now I can kinda feel what I can and cannot buy from the shows but I love going to see what is new.
Sorry for being so long winded.
Jac
