I recently overhauled a Dell laptop from the 90's
It was a PII-400MHz, 10GB HD, 64MB memory.
I installed a 20GB HD and another 64MB chip.
The new HD was a LOT faster (I think the old one was 4000RPM) and performance increase, what with the memory, was dramatic.
The 64MB memory chip was affordable, but 128MB chips were like 3 times as much $$.
2 x 128MB chips (or 1 x 256 or whatever) was therefore simply out of the question...
It can be done, but not cost-effective (not like a nice inexpensive desktop rig).
The HDs are 2.5" and you must disassemble the old one from its framework, using the frame and the plug-in adapter for the new HD.
Laptop parts are somewhat more expensive though...
And a DVD burner, man, I'd want to be sittin' down when I priced it, LoL :)
Me like hockey too (me in denial)
Go Leafs Go,
OOPS I mean Golf Leafs Golf...

Hey! Firstly laptop components are not cheap! They use specialized hardware that is more compact. If you buy a cheap LT you will probably spend much cabbage for upgrades. Cheap LTs inherently are not extremely upgradable. Provide more info as to the brand you would like to purchase, model# and specs and I can give you a better idea.....in Canadian $$s.
Most good LTs have a small door on the bottom to access memory.Hard drives come in three flavours...
1. internal--case must be opened/door on bottom
2. PCMCIA card if supported--slips in much like a floppy but larger
3. external usb HD--somewhat slower I have found
Once again good LTs have door on bottom
As for the cd/dvd you should buy LT with one installed.

Good Luck!
