WinAVI creating too many vob files

I've been using WinAVI to convert ~700mb MST3K files to DVD format. 99% of the time, it creates somewhere between 1.5g - 3.5g worth of .vob files. But occasionally, it creates over 5g worth, so it appears that it is not compressing at its usual rate. I haven't touched any of the WinAVI settings.

Any idea why it's doing this? Thanks.
