Pioneer dvr-108 wont play audio cds

My new Pioneer 108 appears to burn dvd and cd OK.
However it refuses to play audio cd (WMP "encountered error in reading in digital mode") or to open most cdroms (or veeery slowly - reports I/O error)
Not sure if device is faulty or if a driver problem.

Using WinXP sp1 with nvidia nforce2 IDE/Atapi.

I think I have heard of other devices having trouble with nvidia drivers,
