Power surges can be an interesting beast since not all the damage shows up right away.

Does your OS and miscellaneous apps work fine?

The first thing I'd try is uninstalling the drive through Windows following these steps:

Go to Device Manager >

Expand the tree for DVD/CD ROM Drives >

Find the drive in question, right click it and go to Properties >

Under the Driver tab, select Uninstall then OK.

Now reboot and Windows should detect and reinstall the drive.

If this doesn't help try the same steps as above except expand the tree for IDE ATA/ATA Controllers and uninstall either the Primary or Secondary controller depending on which one the drive in question is attatched to. Nero Info Tool can tell you which chain the drive is on under the Configuration tab.

If this doesn't help we should try a new ASPI install. Here's a link to the download and insrtuctions:

If this gets us nowhere we may want to flash the drive with the latest firmware which can be found at this site:

Let us know how you get on or if you have any more questions :)

thanks for the help. however, i've done all that and still it doesn't recognize dvd's anymore. i even reinstalled the ide drivers to no avail. when i flashed the firmware to 1.07 it stopped registering as a dvd drive. i reflashed to 1.06 but still no help. i got fed up with it and bought a liteon dl dvd burnder last night.
