Yes, I do but it requires the MS .NET Framework 2.0 which has not been released to the public yet.

The instructions for splitting the file posted on 11 May by rmgott are great, but I have a slight modification which saves some time and hard drive space (i.e. removes the converting to WAV/MP3 first then re-opening the file). The full instructions are posted below. The credit for this is due to rmgott - I only tweaked it a bit. :)

1. Open the file with Goldwave. You will have to choose "All Files" in Goldwave for it to find then .aa file, because it does not automatically associate the Audible file as a file type it can play.
*****(You will only have to do steps 1-1 through 1-6 the first time you prepare to convert a book.
They deal with setting the default save type (i.e. MP3) and data rate)*****
1-1. Go to Options, then File Formats, then the tab for Default Save Format
1-2. In the drop down box Save as type: select MP3
1-3. Click on the word Attributes, just before the next box.
1-4. Create a new MP3 setting of:
Sampling Rate: 12000 KHZ
Channels: Mono
Bitrate range: 24000 to 56000 bps (i.e. 24-56 Kbps)
VBR quality: 3
-Mode 4 of the Audible files (the highest quality) is approximately equal to MP3 at mono, 11 Khz, 32 Kbps, and the others are lower. Technically you could use that same MP3 setting, but best to play it safe and give it some room to breathe with the VBR. If you have an MP3 player that can not play VBR, I'd suggest 11 Khz, CBR, 40 Kbps.
1-5. If you like, you can name this setting as a preset in the Presets box, and then click the + sign
1-6. Click OK, and then when you are back in the Default Save Format box, make sure you put a check in the box for Use this format for Save As, Save Selection As, and Copy To

2. Open Tools / Cue Points

3. Click on Auto Cue on the lower right hand side

4. Thresh hold is -32.0 (this defines what is considered silence - below a certain dB) minimum length is 0.50 (this is the length of the silence) minimum separation is 3:00.00 (this is how long your segment or tracks will roughly be) cue placement is 50% (this is how much room you are giving it to find a silent spot - some sections will be
3:04 or 3:02 etc.)

5. Select Ok and it will calculate all of the Cue Points

6. Click on split file, choose the directory you want the split mp3 put into (I recomment a fresh folder so you can find all of the pieces). Click on Use base filename and set the ### marks first and then I just put one word to describe what book it is from. I have found that if you put the ### marks first my cd-mp3 player will read them in numerical order but, if they are last my cd-mp3 player jumbles them all up no matter if they appear in order on the cd (This is from a burned cd - I'm not sure how it will work on my mp3 player
I haven't recieved it yet). Click on Use file's current format and attributes.
6-1. I recommend you start the file numbering at 001 rather than 1. Computers list the number 10 before the number 2, as they go by the very first digit/letter. If you start with 001 then 2 would be 002 and 10 would be 010. 00 comes before 01, so 002 would come before 010. If you start at 1 then your files would go 1, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 2, 20, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 (assuming you had 20 files.)

6.5 Click the choice for Use default save format and attributes. This has it save the file in your default format (i.e. the MP3 format you chose as default in steps 1-1 to 1-6)

7. Click Ok and it will split and encode each file, which takes a little while.

8. The added steps keeps you from having to open the file and save it as a WAV or MP3. You can do it all in one fell swoop!

Solves all but the problem of automobile players that seem to take forever to switch tracks.

Well, that's where your software has an advantage, with the replay of the last couple of seconds. :) I don't have an MP3 player in my vehicle(s) so I just use my portable player and a radio transmitter while I drive.

.aa to .mp3 at 50x realtime encoding!

I've finally found a way to convert .aa (audible) to .mp3's at 50x realtime! Just use dBpowerAMP Music Converter which can be found at: http://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm. Install the DirectShow codec: http://www.dbpoweramp.com/codec-central-directshow.htm And follow the instructions found at: http://forum.dbpoweramp.com/showthread.php?p=37339#post37339

IMPORTANT: You must make sure that the "Section Navigation" controls are at the start of the .aa file; otherwise you won't convert the entire file. Also, if you set channels: [as source] and fequency: [as source] and kbps to 56 kbps you can attain the 50x encoding. dBpowerAMP Music Converter is a great program.

Hope you find this as useful as I have.

Just some FYI for the group, I have negotiated a way to legally restore some of this functionality to mp3po so you can again do it in one click. Version 2.0 should be shipping in a couple of weeks as soon as I add this. Unfortuneatly due to the legal requirement of maintainting DRM in the output the file extracted will have to be WMA or some other such medium.

If your program will convert aa files to wmv or whatever, I will surely buy it. It will be well worth it to have them in the format we want.


will it also allow you to copy audio cd's into a format to use on mp3 players?

Batch processing works fine with dbPowerAmp.

There is a dMC File Selector.

The other additions are also useful

Hello,
Yes, dBpowerAMP Music Converter does do batch encoding. All you need to do is select multiple .aa files in Windows Explorer and set the encoding the way you want and click "convert" and all files will be converted in order and the same attributes. Or you can, as state above, use the file selector window. Enjoy the simplicity!

I belonged to Audible for 4 years and finally got tired of their lame excuses for their proprietary format. I have found that I can purchase unabridged CD sets of my favorite authors on ebay for the same amount of money or less than I was paying audible. In fact there are some European sellers that are making multiple book mp3 compilations of authors such as Ludlum, Cussler, Clancy, Koontz, etc. These can be bought for less than $11.

I just wanted to thank everyone who contributed to this thread.

Even as a complete techno idiot I've finally managed to convert some of my audible files so i can listen to them on my MP3 player.

A great saving on CDs, money (and doubtless the environment)

Yes thanks! I have found the GoldWave instructions from TimeKills, and RMGOTT to be extremely useful. GoldWave allows (with a bit of tweeking) to directly convert (as TimeKills pointed out) to a variable bit rate that is not much larger than the original. And RMGott's instructions allow one to auto split the file into chunks the size you like. I only wish the autosplit would allow a few repeated seconds from the last segment, such as TotalRecorder does.

I had been using total recorder, but it would only go about 6x original speed. GoldWave allows on my machine about 25-30x original speed. Someone said that dbPowerAmp would do like 50x. But while DBPowerAmp does say that it is recording at this speed, as far as I can tell it is the same as GoldWave speed.

For me it seems that GoldWave converts much faster to a format like wave. (But who wants files that big). And, to ogg, pretty slow.

So thanks again, TimeKills, and RMGott and all those others who made these discoveries.

Make sure to propogate these instructions, bc I had read that Audible tried to get a forum (this one I think) to delete any threads showing how to backup your audible files ... trying to make it appear that it is illegal to share such info. It is not. Especially since GoldWave and also DBPowerAmp, use the Direct Show digital rights info and verify that you are the owner before they convert.

I am a newbie to this site, but I have been searching the internet for days to find a conversion program to go from .AA to .MP3 or .WAV or .WMA or just about anything else my Creative MuVo player will recognize.

I am ignorant about the legaleeze between Audible.com and other entities. I am a member of Audible.com and pay $21.95 per month and have for over 2 years. None the less I am not trying to rip off anyone, I will gladly pay for the correct software.

I have tried several suggestions in the thread with no luck. Can anyone out there help me??

Tired of dealling with Cd's

I followed Shephild's instructions for DBPowerAMP with no problems at all except for a few seconds at the end missing due to an issue on audible's side with XM radio programs. I am using a old version of the Audible manager(I think 3.5)and I found the link to that in this thread too.
