Gus, ..... what do you know about the U99's, we're all just educated guessing here, ... haven't they given you any info like the guy I talked to the other day? What is the latest "inhouse" word on the u99's and TVGOS?

If you turn off tvguide & you don't get a U99 anymore, you know its guide related.
My e500 did it for a week & then I just left it on during the day & off at night to get listings & I haven't got a U99. I checked 7 days of listings. Now, I just turn it off as usual & haven't got that yet.

Handy, read the posts, most of us in here are still getting U99's, or if not, have no TVGOS data, Gus says there is a new firmware available.

I'm getting the U99's worse than ever now. After I reset it I didn't get ANY for over 2 weeks but since Monday I've been getting a few each day at varying times throughout the day. Before it only happened in the early morning. It also isn't repopulating the TV Guide any longer.

I was looking at the size of the firmware upgrade files. The one from 1-27-2005 is Pana-DVD.frm and is 6,356,992 bytes (on disk) or 6,354,720 in "size." The later file which I downloaded several months ago, and today, is named DMRE85.exe and is 6,471,680 bytes (on disk). Since the January Pana_DVD.frm file is in a zipped folder, you still have the original date, but not so with the latest DMRE85.exe file. The 6,354,928 bytes is what mdqGus referenced as the latest size. This is slightly different from either of the two I have, whether "size" or "size on disk."

Yes, I downloaded the DMR85.exe firmware upgrade file yesterday and again today. In both cases, it was 6.17 MB (6,471,372 bytes) in size, or 6.17 MB (6,471,680 bytes) size on disk. I have NOT tried this file yet, however, since I am going on 74 hours without any U99s and getting TVOG downloads (at least keeping 2 days ahead). The one from 1-27-2005 was a different name and different size -- this is the one I initially used. I "think" I used the newer back in June, but I'm not sure. The one you did today I downloaded last March or April when I first had U99 problems.

daughn,
out of interest can you post the URL you got the firmware from ?
The panny support site does not appear to be offering anything different.
Thanks Tim

A silly thought, does anyone know someone how just bought a new E85 off the shelf, to see if it gets a U99? I can't beleive that if someone buys a DVR for $$$ and gets home and it doesn't work won't return it. Panaosonic must have a slue of firmware DOA DVR's sitting in a room. My E85 was built in March 2004 and bought for X-mas last year, It will not take the update on the Pana site, giving the unsupported nag. Do the retailers have the B__ls to keep selling these things if they will not work...below is what I got back from Pana today;
Dear MR HERB
Thank you for your inquiry. We recommend that you visit www.Panasonic.com
and download the firmware update for this model. Click on support, click
on consumer electronics, click on drivers and downloads, click on dvd
recorders, and the unit will be listed there.

DavieDave,
The BestBuy here in San Antonio stopped carrying the DMR-E85H sometime between April and July 2005. I first saw it in April and was investigating it in my spare time and thinking about buying one until July. When I went back to buy it, they had stopped carrying it.
I can only find them on eBay. And many of them are advertised as brand new out of the box. I have bought a few of these and I believe they were either never sold or were quickly returned. One of them still had the batteries in the original cellophane, so I'm pretty confident it was never sold.
One of the boxes was marked "recalled", so I bet Panasonic did recall these units, at least privately, because so many of them were probably getting returned by "non-tech savvy" people or people who just didn't want the hassle.
Perhaps our thread resident Panasonic service tech might comment.

o.k., just got off the phone with Panny again, they are getting a nasty letter from me, RUDE, hung up on me, after I sat there 25 minutes to talk to somebody, ...anyway, the girls says the ONLY firmware version is 970DL, that is not to fix the U99's, she says to take it to service, if they can't fix it, "we'll see what we can do" we as in Panny, I am happy with the product overall, but the support has gotten me so mad, I'm ready to call the better business beaureu, if they know there is a problem, they are doing a horrible dis-service by blowing off customers who have paid a premium for a stinking glorified VCR, AAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!
Sorry, had to vent, thanks for the opportunity, anyways, I'm going to try one more "factory reset" on the TVGOS tonight, if that doesn't work it's going to the guy down the street, he's already told me he's done all he can, they'll have to put up or shut up at that point.

Dave, I'm not so sure we have a Panny expert here, after what the girl on the phone told me, and the stone wall we recv'd after asking for the "new and improved" firmware! Not to flame anybody, but if you're going to come out and say, I got the new stuff, if you don't want to share, then it's just to P!$$ people off, and make them mad at you. Sorry, I'm feelin' pretty hot after 2 hours to get the girl on the line, she hangs up on me. Uh oh, quittin' time, 45 minutes in rush hour traffic should be enuff to calm me down ;) yeah right!!!!!

Hi everyone. I don't think Panasonics e-mail support is capable of sending any other responeses than: A)update your firmware and B) take it in for servicing. Worthless. I started getting the U99 standby error about the same time everyone else did. I updated to the latest firmware on the panny site, but didn't do any good (I suppose it might have fixed the U99 divide error, but never encountered it) I have Time Warner Cable in SA, TX, not going through a cable box or anything. The problem seems to start up Friday morning and quit Sat. evening and will be fine until the next Friday.
How do I tell what firmware version I have anyway? I'm sorry, but I guess I really don't have anything to add, but I will try to duplicate/confirm/disconfirm anything you guys try... Thanks.
Anyone know any corporate phone numbers at Panasonic to contact? PR, consumer relations, etc.?

After looking on another forum, I realized I made a stupid error. The DMRE85H.exe file actually needed executed FIRST to unzip the update file, which, of course, WAS the old one of 1-27-05. Sorry for being dense!! In the other forum, it doesn't look like anyone has solved the problem, either. Oh, I forgot to say that when I went into SERVICEMODE to check my update version, it did the same as a reset -- I lost all my TVOG listings. But hopefully will get them back tonight.

File comparison,
OK I've compared the .frm file issued by Panasonic on 1/27/05 970DL and available from their website with a later version, allegdely released very recently to service departments and while its exactly the same size as 970DL there are signficant differences at the start of the code.
I've taken a peek at the file using note pad for want of a better tool.
Thus I conclude there is a later / different version available for the E85.
I'll attempt to flash my panny with it later tonite and report back.

Just an update and a few questions:
1. Have we established that the firmware on the Panasonic website for the 85H is the SAME as the one on Roger A's site? I saw in the other u99 thread (in addition to timdf's post--thanks) that this firmware is "new" as of today or thereabouts. Can this be verified beyond timdf's attempt?
2. I'm presuming that the firmware there has NOT fixed the TVGOS U99 error.
3. I'm still using the old firmware, and went almost a week without the U99, but it popped up again (since not appearing since 9/30) TODAY (10/6) sometime between 4 and 5:30 EST. I had one show taping from 3-3:30PM, and it was after that finished. Perhaps this problem happens when TVGOS tries to download AFTER the transmission is already "in progress"? Has anyone seen U99 during a 24 hour period when they had no shows scheduled to tape?
4. I'm not getting the "incomplete" listings in TVGOS posted here, although since the U99 started in Aug-Sept, the updates seem A LOT slower than previously--I mean, in 24 hours I'd have a week filled in, now I'm lucky if I get 3 COMPLETE days filled in that time.

I downloaded the firmware update for the E95 from Panasonic's website and it is the same one. It just displayed the "unsupport" message.

Hey everyone...
I've been plagued with the same U99 error that you have all been discussing. I have a DMR-E95H, and began having the problem about mid september. I have done what I can to troubleshoot the issue, and similar to the rest of us, Panasonic has been useless in resolving this issue. What I did notice is that, the U99 error seems to occur more frequently when the unit has High-Speed Recording enabled. I had the feature on since my initial purchase back in April, 2005. When I reset, I guess it was turned off, and hadn't had the problem for about a week. When I noticed the unit hadn't had the High-Speed Recording feature, and turned it on. When I did, I was faced with reoccuring U99 errors, so I turned it off again this morning. I will wait it out, but as of now, the unit hasn't shown the U99 error when before, it occured 4~5 times during the course of each day...
regardless, just wanted to share my efforts. Maybe the rest of you will find it helpful.
Cliff
DMR-E95H Owner... just bought the Philips HDRW720/17 while i wait for the U99 TVGOS problem to be fixed... I hope the philips doesnt have an issue too

Thanks, Cliff, but I am fully convinced that the error lies in the TVGuide Onscreen ONLY. This has been proven by those who were so disgusted they just disabled it. I refuse to do this as it limits the functionality of the unit for me. I updated the firmware tonight for the 85H, and see what looks like additional code (comparing with WordPad), even though the version still comes up as 970DL, the Timer as 110DC, and the drive as J131.
As has been said before, I think either Gemstar or the cable companies "tweaked" the TVGuide signal in Aug-Sept, and this is confusing the Panasonic units. I'd still like to know the exact nature of the "tweak" or exactly WHAT changed. My only other wild guess as to the nature of the problem caused by the tweak is "grayed out" timer programs--those selected as "regularly" or "weekly" that haven't downloaded yet, or that were pre-empted by football or whatever (the date comes up as ??/?? in the schedule). Can anyone who has NOT had any "gray" recordings and still had the U99 error refute my wild guess? Thanks.
I'm just looking for something to explain the erratic nature of the error--it doesn't occur at EVERY download, and can come up daily or once a week or every 2 weeks...must be SOMETHING other than the download itself, or it would happen every time the unit updates the listings, right?

Sorry for the double post, but did anyone else notice THIS the TVGOS debugging thread on the avsforum (posted previously by anncoates, page 8 on Sept 29):
part of posting by ChrisC47 on avsforum.com:
Finally, and all you disappearing EPG guys pay attention to this, I was talking to the chief engineer of the state PBS operation last night (at a SMPTE meeting, I'm a broadcast engineer) and he reported that at the same time that my Pioneer originally went ballistic (Sep 10th) they had been installing some new HBI equipment (similar to VBI) and it definitely screwed up the system, including downstream receivers. They ended up having to reset equipment. So whatever that glitch was that came down the pipe was really screwing up our EPGs.
(end of post)
Is anyone here in broadcasting that can find out if MANY PBS stations installed new equipment in the same time frame? Seems unlikely, but we're all grasping at straws here...
