Your playing a PAL game on an NTSC PS2 or vice versa. Try swithing the video mode in the Swap Magic boot menu to PAL. If that doesn't work, you may need to patch the game to NTSC.

37. Q. I downloaded a PAL game, how do I convert it to NTSC?
A. Use Adrenaline patcher if it's an EA game: http://www.megagames.com/ps2/ps2_utils_files.shtml#ADRenalin%20Patcher Note: I've been told this works for non EA games as well. The screen won't be perfectly centered, unless you have a modchip that forces video mode.
Or patch with PAL2NTSC patcher with Y fix for non EA games: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/121718

What kind of media are you using? Check the media ID. To check the media ID, insert your disc, open DVD Decrypter and check what it says under Manufacturer or Media ID. Check it against this link:

1. Q. How do I burn PS2 games?
A. Use DVD Decrypter.
Guide: http://www.angelfire.com/games6/easytutorial/dvddec/dvddec.html Burn at 4x on an 8x DVD-R.

2. Q. Does the type of media I use matter?
A. YES: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/240341
If you're too lazy to read, use Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Ritek, Sony, TDK, Maxell, Sony or Phillips DVD-R's. Avoid Memorex, Staples, Imation, Dynex, Princo, Bulqpaq, etc.
CMC Magnetics is garbage. Need proof (Thanks to Alkohol):
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/262544
If you really want to do the PS2 backup thing right, pick up some Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim's. I only burn to TYG02, the 8x Taiyo Yuden DVD-R's. So far I've never had a lag, skip, freeze, or boot failure since I switched to Taiyo Yuden's. With results like that, why would I use anything else?

10. Q. What does rebuilding an iso mean?
A. It means that some games 4.36-4.38GB's may need rebuilt to work with Swap Magic. This isn't true for ALL games over 4.38GB's and differs on a game to game basis. There is no need to rebuild games if you have a modchip. Another purpose of rebuilding is to make games run smoother. Usually the size of the game after rebuilding is smaller, but not always. If you're a Swap Magic user, make sure to look out for dummy files when rebuilding.

11. Q. How Do I rebuild games?
A. With Nero and Isobuster (works as long as no single file is over 2 GB's): http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/197949
With CD/DVDGen: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/210515
With Expert (Gnie's new rebuilding tool):
Gnie's PS2 Auto Rebuilder Tool Download (Thanks to 3DLuis):
http://www.alucard.cc/ps2/ExPERT_v1.03.rar
Instructions to Gnie's Tool ExPERT:
From Anthony 05:
Download it and then follow these instrcutions and it will work.

1. select Shrinker_ps2_psp_CdDvd5_iso.epi on the plugins list.
2. Select the iso.
3. Click extract LBA
4. Click extract file
5. Click rebuild file
6. Click rebuild lba.

Make sure you do it in that order.

This worked for me when every other way failed.
It is very easy to do so even the noobies should be able to do it.
Keep in mind im backing up the PAL version, but if your having trouble backing up with NTSC then i dont see a problem trying.
Good luck.

49. Q. I'm rebuilding game X, I'm concerned it has dummy files. How do I identify the dummy files?
A. From Hursty: When you see the iso has dummy files.i.e 00DUMMY. 01DUMMY. GARBAGE ETC, you need to get rid of them, by replacing them with a file. So on the desktop, right click the mouse, select "new" > text document and rename it as it appears in isobuster, then click enter. Then open the text document on the desktop, hit space once, then save, this will create a text document with 1 byte in it, Do this for all the dummy files you have, as some games have more than one.

Alien 13, Hey I have been able to back up several games, but the one I am stuck on is Mercenaries. I see you have a link for the cddvdgen 1.5, but when I click on the link it says page cannot be displayed. Any other place to get that program.Thanx

My copy of Mercenaries was a straight burn. You can find CD/DVD Gen in several places.

http://teammodders.com/download.php?action=category&cat_id=8 You have to register, but it's free.

Tokijin, I have copied aboout five games already. I use Verbatim 16X DVD+R with no trouble at all. I have a slim V12 PS2 with swap magic 3.6. Mercenaries will start to load up until it is on the screen where it is loading your objective. That is the screen where it freezes. What am I doing wrong if you were able to do a straight burn. Thanx

Yeah I used DVD Decrypter. I use Taiyo Yuden DVD-R's. I have a modchip though, you may need to rebuild the game since you have Swap Magic. Verb's are excellent, no probs there. My copy is the NTSC version. It's 4.37GB's and doesn't have any dummy files. Rebuilding should be pretty easy. Use any of the three methods, Expert is supposed to be very easy to use.

10. Q. What does rebuilding an iso mean?
A. It means that some games 4.36-4.38GB's may need rebuilt to work with Swap Magic. This isn't true for ALL games over 4.38GB's and differs on a game to game basis. I use swapmagic 3.6 DVD. Is there any way I can rebuild an ISO without using cd/dvd gen. I cannot get this program for the life of me. I download the rar file, do not know what to do with a page from Word full of chicken scratches. I have downloaded the zipped with a patch file, then unzipped to another folder. Do not know what to do now. If I can avoid cd/dvd gen I would love it.

I avoid it like the black plague. Try rebuilding it with Nero and IsoBuster or Expert. Check my post right above that one. It contains three methods of rebuilding. I never use CD/DVDGen. It's a good program, I just think rebuilding with Nero and IsoBuster is easier. Expert is supposed to be really easy. Either method should work fine.

The dummy file for Smackdown vs. RAW is in the PAC folder. It's called DUMMY.DAT You must overwrite the dummy file if you're using the game with Swap Magic. If you don't, the game will not boot.

Yes several people have backed it up without using CD/DVDGen or rebuilding. If you have to rebuild, use one of the other methods I posted. Try a straight burn first. Burn at 4x to quality 8x media like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim.

did the straight burn for madden 06 work for you Tokijin? I have read where people are having to do something with the dnas codes? Not what that is and what I am supposed to do with it. I would hate to waste a straight burn if it did not work for you. Let me know if it worked for you.

Actually I rebuilt Madden 2006. A straight burn probably would've worked, but I had to rebuild a couple EA games when I using Ritek media. When I first got my chip, I had to rebuild NBA Live 2006 and NHL 2006, so I rebuilt Madden as a precaution. Since I switched to Taiyo Yuden media, I haven't rebuilt a single game. I have a modchip, not Swap Magic. There is a dummy file in WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2006 NTSC version. If you try a straight burn it won't boot with Swap Magic. There's a dummydata file in the PAC folder. Either your friend rebuilt it, downloaded a rebuilt version, or your just incredibly lucky. Are you using Swap Magic or a chip? Dummy files don't affect a modchip at all.

What game are you trying to shrink? Are you talking about rebuilding a game or shrinking a DVD-9 game (Dual Layer) to DVD-5 (single layer)?

18. Q. How do I shrink a DVD-9 game to DVD-5?
A. This differs on a game to game basis. Typically when shrinking a DVD-9 game to fit on a DVD-5 DVD, you'll want to take out FMV's, dummy files, and extras. Not all games have dummy files. For popular games search the forums and you'll find some nice rebuild guides for Xenosaga, God of War, and GTA 4. There's only 14 or 15 DVD-9 games at present, so don't panic. You only have to do this with Swap Magic or HD Advance 2.0 and earlier.
