HD Utility for Playstation 2, can i use it for any drive?

If I am able to aquire a copy of this utility can I use any hard drive and format it to the PS2 format?

I want to get the new maps for Socom but dont want to buy a game like final fantasy bundled with the hard drive. I just want the hard drive for Socom 2.

I also have a copy of the map on disk. I have yet to test it out though. Looking at an uphill battle.
