Can I play a DVD-R disk in a DVD+R writer and read as data or video?

If so then how come my mate gave me a film on DVD-R and yet I can't see it in the DVD+R writer?

Hm, your drive might be slightly picky with the media (the disc brand), but generally speaking both; plus and minus; writers can _read_ each other's discs just fine. A03 can read stuff burned on Philips + drives and vice versa.
