HELP! how do I increase max open files???

Im trying to download something from bittorrent, but because it consistes of hundreds of files, i keep getting:
errno 24: too many open files.
I tried the bittorrent FAQ which didnt really help, but it mentioned being able to change the OS settings (mine is XP) to get around this, and mentioned something about 'ulimit'.
Does anyone know where I can find this setting? Any help will be hugely appreciated. Cheers.
