xbox widow-2-b...what do I buy?

Hi, I'm buying my b/f and xbox for christmas and his friend has one that is 'chipped' I think the word is. (please excuse my ignorance, I don't know anything about them).
His chipped machine can play nearly any game ever out. So, do I buy a normal box and find a shop to chip it or is there anywhere I can buy one already chipped, online? How do I know it will play all the games and is there anything else I need besides?
When I try looking around, I'm getting all confused with the jargon and don't want to get the wrong thing. Tried my local game shop but the guy there was as useful as a chocolate kettle and just tried to get me to buy a playstation2 despite me telling him he already has one! Doh! I dunno, some people!
Please help. It would make one over grown kid very happy.
