Is Nero really stable and consistent?

I'm obviously not the first person to have Nero drive me crazy. Sometimes it failed at the start of the burn, sometimes right at the end (the dreaded disc-at-once error). Having used Nero 6.6 without much success lately, I uninstalled it and am now using v6 Ultra edition.

But now I have just somehow managed to burn a film onto a Memorex -R that I couldn't burn with a Maxell +R and the superb Maxell -R a few days earlier. Comparing all 3 logs, I find the errors on the Maxell burns start with with the SCSI indication. What does that mean? (I didn't get those lines with my successful Memorex burn.)

I'm really getting sick of never knowing if a burn will be succesful or not. Someone mentioned using Copy2DVD. Is that a good program? Are there any other good alternatives to Nero?

strange...I've used Nero 5, 5.5, 6.0, and now 6.3, and I rarely get any write errors. Maybe 1 in 100 fail, and its usually dues to faulty media. I also use Maxell CDRs, and they work great. Perhaps its your burner???

For the best quality mp3s use EAC (exact audio copy) to rip your audio CDs and LAME to encode them. Follow this guide:

Whatr type of burner are you using? Is it external? You could try loadin ASPI drivers from Adaptec this sometimes help. Also update the firmware to your DVD Writer more and more this is moost people's problems lately (not keeping hardware and software up to date) I'm not saying these are you problems it is just that they are a good place to start. You are absolutly correct and not alone in having problems with Nero. I myself have not had 1 problem with Nero and I love it, but the fact is there are 100's of post's on here with similar problems to yours. I also Have CopyToDvd and it is a very good and stable program you can down load it here for a 20 day trial to see if you like it. Some people have just switched to thet proggy and were happy. It can't do everything Nero can, but what it can do it does well and it also links to DVD Shrink.

I had the same problem, it's the cd's or dvd's not a hardware that is the problem. My problem was with princo DVD-R a bad batch it there manufacturing. Get new disks and try again (with different batch number).

I'm using a TDK 880n internal drive updated with the latest firmware. What leads me to beleive that the problem lies largeely with Nero is: 1) Movies I've ripped onto my HD that I couldn't burn with Nero work fine with Copy2Dvd and 2) Trying to get rid of a pile of notorious bad Memorex -R's would result in over 90% failure rate with Nero, but was 80% successful with Copy2DVD.

Has anyone else had consistent success with other buring software? Surely Nero is not the only (reliable) game in town?!

I also use alcohol for burning. There are a lot of issues with Nero & windows service pack 2. These have been resolved now though.
You will find that a lot of people here like Nero. Also, you will find that memorex makes inconsistent quality dvd blanks, princo does not have a good name for itself either!
My Nero 6.6.03 seems to work OK.

I use to have my Nero lock up every time i tried to burn something. Then a friend told me that because my drive was running a FAT32 system that it could not hold enough info for some reason, not sure why. He suggested that i reformat the drive to NTSC format(at least i think that was what the other was called, there are only two formats you have to use), since it was a spare drive i figured what the heck and did it. Now i have no problems. Only drawback is that if you reformat the drive from FAT32 to NTSC you will lose EVERYTHING that is on it. It will just be a blank drive.

If you are running WinXP you do Not have to reformat your hard drive to make it NTFS. WinXP will do it for you and you will not lose a thing.

To convert an existing FAT or FAT32 volume to NTFS, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt.
2. At the command prompt, type the following, where drive letter is the drive that you want to convert:
convert drive letter: /fs:ntfs
For example, type the following command to convert drive E to NTFS:
convert e: /fs:ntfs
Note If the operating system is on the drive that you are converting, you will be prompted to schedule the task when you restart the computer because the conversion cannot be completed while the operating system is running. When you are prompted, click YES.
3. When you receive the following message at the command prompt, type the volume label of the drive that you are converting, and then press ENTER:
The type of the file system is FAT.
Enter the current volume label for drive drive letter
4. When the conversion to NTFS is complete, you receive the following error message at the command prompt:
Conversion complete
5. Quit the command prompt.

All the problems I've experienced with Nero has come while using XP (and therefore NTFS).

Is anyone using something other than Nero to burn their DVD's, and what was your experience?

Dear Neos,The 6.6 Nero has presented a few problems. I have found that a compleat removal with Nero's clean tool and a reboot after removal solved my problems. I am running w2000 w sp4 - then a clean install...I did not install InCD-packet writer.

To preserve your sanity and billfold, you may wish to use an RW or simulate a test burn until stability is reached. My unique problem w/ N6.6 was auto insert notify wasn't. The drive kept the prior disk as loaded...I traced this to a "dll from hell" from who else-microsoft..whatabunchof nice guys.

Even though Nero is the best solution for burning, their tech support is on a par with the industry: lacking. DP70

I use DVD Shrink to rip. Never had problems with that since I took people's advice on this board and bought a cheap DVD-ROM.

I have tried to use Nero's simulation function. It would simulate correctly and THEN fail! What a collosal waste of time!

Nero continues to perplex me. It reminds me a little of Roxio, in that it is a widely used and distributed program, but the quality and reliability are suspect.

I have been using Copy2DVD with fairly good success lately. Quick, easy to use, and most importantly, reliable. Hard to argue with that.

Any other programs that can burn DVD's successfully?
