External Sony Strange One, Help Needed

Using Nero Ultra, Win XP Pro, external I-link firewire Sony DRX530UL dvd rw. DVD drive will disappear from windows whenever it feels like it.
The drive does not need to be in use when it does this but it also happens in the middle of a burn.
Have installed latest software/firmware updates to no effect.
Also Athlon 2200+ / 768 ddram / k7s5a motherboard / PCI firewire card.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
