Pioneer DVR-108 burning problem

I just bought a Pioneer DVR-108 installed in a Bytecc ME340 External 5.25" Enclosure via USB 2.0.
Running Windows XP Professional Service Pack 1 on Dell Precision M60. I tried to burn a movie backup on the hard drive using DVD+R, using Nero 6.0.0.11 and CloneDVD2.5.4.3 with different burning speed, but all failed. So far nothing works for DVD disc but I tried on a CDRW, it worked. Can anyone tell me if my set up is wrong or I should just return the burner, because this is just a crapy product from Pioneer. Thanks!
