is there a difference between cd games or dvd games (for playstation 2) please explain,, THX

there can be a huge difference in size
ps2 orignal cd based game(blue/purple underside) upto 650mb
ps2 orignal dvd5 based game(silver underside) upto 4.37gb
ps2 orignal dvd9 based game(gold underside) upto 8.5gb
