Sanyo DRW-500 and other dvd recorders

hey all. I know that dvd recorders are somewhat new, and they all probably act somewhat quirky and have some bugs in the design of them. That said, I have a question for those who have some experience in dvd recorders. I bought one - yes, a Sanyo DRW-500. There was another person who posted something on here about the unit. My question is more of a general question concerning the recording modes of all dvd recorders out there.

Now of course, you have your 1 hour setting, 2 hour setting, 3 hour setting, 4 hour setting, etc. Some say they will record for 10 hours. Others say 6 hours. Others say 8 hours. I have a couple dvd's made on a Panasonic dvd recorder, recorded in the "XP", or high quality mode. On the Sanyo unit, it is called "HQ". I tried to read them on the Sanyo, and it would not read.

That is one thing that's not very cool, in my opinion. Then again, dvd recorders are very new, and like i said above, they all probably have bugs and act quirky. I still think they should all be compatible, like vcr's, when they came out, had sp, ep, and slp. Most, if not all vcr's had these recording modes.

Would you think that the disc needs to be finalized first, before trying to read it on another dvd recorder?

I'd appreciate any and all helpful replies to this question.
